Party Nails is the brilliantly odd concoction of leftfield, spasmodic dance music that spills from Raf Rundell and James Rand. Rundell is a veteran of the south London scene and an accomplished DJ, promoter, musician, A&R man, broadcaster and more besides. He is better known in the wider world however as one half of The 2 Bears with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, James Rand forms 50% of industrial Hip-Hop outfit God Colony and is a renowned mix engineer. His previous credits include Sega Bodega, Beatrice Dillon and Mykki Blanco.
The result of combining the two together is Party Nails. Uncompromising, undiluted and unstoppable, Party Nails is not messing about. There is no pretence here, just tough, wonky but extra functional DJ material. They have previously released music through their own means, but are now sailing under the colours of Accidental Jnr.
A side ‘Wobbler’ gets straight down to business right from the off. Laden with sharp, jittering percussion, rolling bass and crisp sampling, the track hurtles forwards at speed, pausing for nothing. The B side continues this motion with layers of thundering, fuzzing feedback and rolling drums that form ‘Yassassin’. The B2 ‘Motherr’, then eases back the tempo to settle into a hard-grooving drum workout, littered with digital misbehaviour.
The records playful and spontaneous sound serves to perfectly sum up the Party Nails mantra, “DON’T ASK WHY – JUST BANG THE NAILS”.
